Our Story

Ron and Ellen Coppess

Sunny Crest Youth Ranch (SCYR) was founded in 2007 by Ron and Ellyn Coppess, both of whom are retired professional educators. From their years in the public schools, they saw a critical need to provide a safe place for at risk kids to grow up and learn the kind of life skills that would give them a second chance at a brighter future. The first rancher arrived in March, 2009.

SCYR is a unique residential treatment facility for abused and neglected boys, ages 10 – 17. It is located on 80 acres of rural land in Sunfield, Michigan and is a working ranch operation that is designed to provide the experiences and activities every child must have to develop and mature into a responsible adult.  Combining this safe and structured atmosphere with our Program has proven an effective way to help break the cycle of destructive life patterns too many kids endure.

Today, the success of Sunny Crest Youth Ranch (SCYR) is rooted in the commitment of a team of concerned, compassionate people who work to build hope and life skills into those who are among the most vulnerable in our community – abused and neglected children.

The vision for the future is that when fully completed, SCYR will be home to up to 40 ranchers living as families in six homes, staffed 24/7.  SCYR is licensed by the State of Michigan as a Child Caring Institution, and is organized as a 501(c) 3 non-profit entity.
