Just over a year ago several youth joined together to form SCYR’s first Transitions Group. This therapeutic group was created to help our youth shift from the foster care system into independent adulthood.
The Transition program focuses on preparing for independence, accepting change, setting realistic goals, and employment training. The boys have learned interview and job search skills, participated in mock interviews, prepared meals, and set both short and long term goals. Currently the Transitions Group is focusing on setting S.M.A.R.T (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time sensitive) Goals for their future. They are also learning about personality characteristics that are an asset to employers, transferable skills employers seek, and descriptive language to utilize during employment interviews. Several of our Transition’s youth have made great progress at SCYR and have achieved many accomplishments.
Last spring Maleke and Logan graduated from Lakewood High School. Maleke moved on to Michigan Career Technical Institute and will be completing his vocational certificate in the spring of 2016. Several group members have held seasonal or part-time employment positions within the community this year. Chris and Maleke both spent their summer working for the Ionia County Parks and Recreation Department, Brian is currently employed at a tire repair shop learning about breaks and tire maintenance, and David is currently working as a laborer at a lumber yard.
In just a few short months four youth in the Transitions Group will be graduating high school and will be working towards moving on from SCYR to continue their journey towards independence and success! Sunny Crest Youth Ranch is very proud of all their growth, leadership, and accomplishments this year!
